COMPANY D, 11TH INFANTRY REGIMENT, PENNSYLVANIA RESERVE CORPS (40th PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT) HISTORY – 1861 to 1865 |

The regimental colors of the 11th Pennsylvania Reserves was captured by Rebel soldiers on the field at the battle of Gaines’ Mill, June 27, 1862. Taken to Richmond as a trophy of war, it was re-captured by Federal troops at the fall of Richmond in 1865. It was taken to the War Department at Washington, D. C. and kept with other Federal colors captured during the war. In 1905, it was returned to the State of Pennsylvania, and resides in the State Historical Archives. |
