The plates furnished by Maverick-Clarke for the original series letters continued to be used throughout 1914.  The plates for the 50 pesos notes of Series F were used throughout the life of the Villa administration.

This 28 m.m. diameter treasury seal appears on ALL Maverick-Clarke notes, either on the front or back.  Seal colors vary slightly, but for all denominations the seals appear to be Black, Blue-Black, or Greenish-Black.

Note:  NO Chihuahua Treasury control letters are associated with these seals.

SECRETARIA DE HACIENDA Y CRÉDITO PÚBLICO – E. C. DE MEXICO

Control Letters:

Control letters were applied ONLY in association with the ECdM seal, and NOT in combination with the Chihuahua Treasury Seals.  A scheme of lettering has been detected for some denominations.

50 centavos – The scheme detected is the abbreviation of the name of [B]enito [J]uárez, the spelling of the name of his home town, “GUELATA“, and the letter “O” for Oaxaca, the state of his birth.  It is assumed that one control letter was used per 50,000 notes. At present, no notes of the first run are known WITHOUT the seal and control letters.  See Table 1.

1 peso – The scheme detected is the spelling of the words “Constitucion y Reformas“, repeated through three complete cycles, and partially repeated through a fourth.  It is assumed that one letter was used per 10,000 notes.  At present, serial numbers ranging from 0260 to 207076 are known for notes NOT bearing the ECdM seal.  Notes ranging from 165393 to 743878 DO bear the seal.  The reason for failure to stamp the earliest serial numbers, and for the overlap in serial numbers is unknown.  See Table 2.

5 pesos – No sensible scheme has been detected for the control letters of this series.  It is assumed that one letter was used per 10,000 notes.  At present,  notes ranging from 14205 to 135360 have been found WITHOUT the ECdM seal, while notes ranging from 70797 to 193372 have been found WITH the ECdM seal.  As with the 1 peso notes, the earliest serial numbers do not bear the seal and there is an overlap in numbers that do.  The reasons for this are unknown.  See Table 3.

10 pesos – No sensible scheme has been detected for the control letters of this series.  It is assumed that one letter was used per 10,000 notes.  Three varieties of 10 pesos notes from the Maverick-Clarke run have been found.  Notes WITHOUT the ECdM seal, and with the Chihuahua Treasury seal on the back range from 0233 to 31067.  Notes WITHOUT the ECdM seal, and with the Chihuahua Treasury seal on the front range from 48926 to 149933.  Notes WITH the ECdM seal range from 8843 to 17643.  At present, the reasons for this distribution are unknown. See Table 4.

20 pesos – Two paired sets of letters spell the words “Amor” and “Roma”.  It is assumed that one letter was used per 10,000 notes. although such an assumption exceeds the number of notes printed.  At present, NO 20 pesos notes of the first run are known WITHOUT the ECdM seal and control letters.  See Table 5.

50 pesos – The scheme detected for this denomination is supposed to be the spelling of the name “Francisco Villa”, forwards and backwards.  This is based on the evidence of only ONE set of letter found on ECdM sealed 50 pesos notes – F XIV     XIV A   At present, NO 50 pesos notes of the first run are known WITHOUT  the ECdM seal and control letters.  See Table 6.
