Mr. Simon Prendergast posited the scheme displayed above to account for the application of Letter-Roman Numeral control letters to the 1 peso notes on which the ECdM seal appears.  Seventy-four sets of Letter-Roman Numeral control letters were believed to have been used by Carrancista treasury officials.  Mr. Prendergast speculated that each set of Letter-Roman Numeral control letters were applied to 10,000 notes.  1 peso notes without the ECdM seal have been seen with serial numbers ranging from 0260 to 216690, while 1 peso notes with the ECdM seal have been seen with serial numbers ranging from 264511 to 743878.  While no overlap in serial numbers has been seen to date, the ranges thus far noted seem to indicate that the Carrancistas received fewer than 550,000 notes of this issue.  In addition to this anomaly, Mr. Elmer Powell has discovered some apparently genuine notes that do not conform to Mr. Prendergast’s posited schema.

Notes serial numbered 496462 and 492610 have control letters T-IL.  The Roman Numeral IL should be associated with the letter C if the system is to be upheld.  Note serial number 487885 bears the combination I-XLIII.  As in the cased above, XLIII should be associated with the letter with the letter C, rather than the letter I.  The scheme proposed by Mr. Prendergast must be considered tentative until more date has been gathered.

Mr. Powell has also discovered an error note with the control letters LXXXIV-Y / Y-LXXIV.  This appears to be a printer’s error.
