Text Box: John and 19 other recruits arrived and were parceled out to their units.  John was assigned to Company D, 11th Reserves.  McCall’s Pennsylvania Reserves Division encamped at Falmouth, VA, at Camp Washington.

Apr 11, 1861

Sam and John Beers enrolled at Evansburgh, Pennsylvania, in Captain John Stewart’s Connoquenessing Rangers.  Sam was accepted, but John was denied service by virtue of being under-age.

Jun 10, 1861

Sam Beers was called up for service with the Rangers in the newly-formed Pennsylvania Reserve Corps, at Camp Wilkins, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Jul 21, 1861

First Battle of Bull Run, Virginia. The first great battle of the Civil War turned into a disaster for the Federal Army, and a threat of Confederate attack on the capital.

Jul 24, 1861

Sam Beers and the 11th Pennsylvania Reserves shipped to Washington, D. C. for defense of the capital following the Union disaster at First Bull Run, July 21.

July 29, 1861

11th Pennsylvania Reserves sworn into federal service and re-designated 40th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, a designation that was almost never used, even in official correspondence.

Dec 21, 1861

Engagement at Drainesville, Virginia.  Sam Beers and Company D of the 11th Reserves were not committed to battle, but were held in reserve.

Mar 17, 1862

John Beers enlisted at Butler City, Butler County, PA.

Mar 31, 1862

John traveled by rail with at least 24 other recruits plus recruiters from Butler, PA to Alexandria, VA.

John arrived Alexandria, VA.

~Apr 5, 1862

John traveled by rail from Alexandria to Falls Church, VA.  Arrived at Falls Church, marched to Camp Pierpont.

~Apr 6, 1862

John began training at Camp Pierpont.  Weapons issued - Model 1842 musket with bayonet.

Apr 7-9, 1862

Training curtailed due to a severe and persistent storm – rain, sleet and snow.

Apr 10 - ~May 6, 1862

Recruit training at Camp Pierpont resumed.

Apr 28, 1862

Recruits marched from Camp Pierpont to join their regiment.  Company D, 11th Reserves was encamped near Falmouth, VA.
